The people of Bhola constantly face harsh tests due to the adverse effects of climate change. Every year, cyclones and tidal surges wash away homes, making life increasingly unbearable for those living along this vulnerable coastal region. Yet, in the midst of these ongoing disasters—when hope begins to fade—the ‘Resilient Homestead and Livelihood Support to the Vulnerable Coastal People of Bangladesh (RHL) project, implemented by Grameen Jano Unnayan Sangstha (GJUS), has emerged as a new beacon of hope. Funded by the Green Climate Fund and the Palli Karmo-Sahayak Foundation, the project is being carried out in Bhola Sadar and Borhanuddin upazilas, bringing safe shelter and new livelihood opportunities to the most vulnerable people.
The climate-resilient houses built under this project are not just structures of brick and concrete; they symbolize dreams and safety for the people of Bhola. Constructed on elevated foundations, these homes provide protection from the destruction caused by cyclones and tidal surges, allowing families to live with confidence and security. So far, 143 climate-affected and vulnerable families have received new homes under this initiative. Where once even a light rain would make staying indoors impossible, now these families remain safe in their homes even during powerful storms. Surrounded by water, their faces now glow with the relief and joy of having a secure shelter. Even when the water level rises at night, they can sleep peacefully—this, perhaps, is the project’s most touching success.
